敵も認めた漢の褒美

前田利常の家臣平野弥次右衛門の従者に五右衛門という人物がいた。

大坂の陣の際、真田丸を攻めていた五右衛門は、主人である弥次右衛門の
楯になり、十八発もの銃弾を全身に浴びてしまう。だが五右衛門は

「なんのこれしき、かすり傷でござるわ！」と笑い捨てた。

五右衛門の剛気を称賛した真田丸の兵達は、
「名を聞かせ給え」と五右衛門に声をかけた。

「う……」だが五右衛門は困惑した。なぜならば、まだ名乗る姓を
許されていなかったからだ。これを見た主人の平野弥次右衛門はすかさず
「我が姓をつかわす！」と叫んだ。

これに五右衛門は胸を張り、大声で真田丸に答えた。

「われは平野弥次右衛門が下人、五右衛門である！
これまで御供したる褒美として、たった今、姓を賜って
平野五右衛門となり申した！」

すると真田丸から、平野五右衛門を称える祝福の拍手が
湧き上がったのであった。

殺伐とした戦場の中の、ちょっと良い話である。
